What drives the cost of landscaping a Dubai villa garden
Two villa gardens of the same size can be quoted very differently, and the reasons are usually in the ground, the shade and the water rather than in the plants. This guide explains what moves the cost of landscaping in Dubai, so you can read a quotation line by line and decide where to spend.

Why a garden has no price per square metre
Owners often ask what a garden costs before anyone has walked the plot. The honest answer is that a garden is several construction jobs at once: ground works, paving and walls, pipework and cables, planting and watering, structures and light, and each can be simple or involved. A lawn with a path round it and a resort-style garden with a pool deck and an outdoor kitchen are both called landscaping. That is why we do not publish a price list for landscaping a villa garden in Dubai: each garden is priced for its site after a free site visit, and the quotation follows the scope you approve. This guide explains what moves the figure, so you can see whether offers include the same things. If a pool is part of the plan, our guide to what drives swimming pool cost covers the water; this page covers everything around it.
Start with the plot and what is already on it
Before any material is chosen, the ground sets a large part of the cost. We check these on the site visit that starts every garden design drawn in 3D, and a quotation should show it has allowed for them.
Size and shape
A larger garden needs more of everything, but shape matters nearly as much. A square plot behind the villa is simple to build; a long strip round a townhouse means more edges, more cut paving and more irrigation zones for the same area.
What has to come out
Not every Dubai garden starts as bare sand. Old paving, a tired lawn, dead hedges or the slab of a previous shade structure have to be broken out and carried off the plot, and that removal is a cost line of its own.
Sand and soil
Many villa plots are handed over on compacted sand with little in it for a plant to live on. Beds, lawn and tree pits need the sand dug out and replaced with a growing soil, and the depth and area of that replacement separates a garden that thrives from one replanted every year.
Levels and drainage
A garden that falls towards the house, or a pool deck that sheds water into the beds, needs levels corrected before anything is laid. Steps, retaining edges and drains are structure and cost like structure.
Old irrigation and buried services
An existing watering system is rarely worth keeping whole, but the pipes, supply point, pool pipework and cables already in the ground decide where new ones go and what must be moved.
Access in a gated community
In many Dubai communities the only way into the back garden is a narrow side passage, so soil, paving and machinery come through in small loads. Where an excavator cannot reach, more is done by hand and the programme stretches.
Hard landscape against soft landscape
The balance of paving and planting sets the budget
Hard landscape is everything built: paving and interlock, paths and steps, retaining and feature walls, planters, decking and the structure of a water feature. Soft landscape is everything that grows, with its soil and water. In many gardens the hard landscape takes the larger share of the cost, because paving sits on a prepared, compacted base with falls to a drain, and walls need foundations whatever their height. Large-format paving, natural stone and clad walls generally cost more than interlock and plain render, and curves and changes of material add cutting and waste. In many villa gardens the boundary wall is the largest surface you see; our page on boundary wall design and garden walls explains the options and why the structure behind the finish comes first.
Soft landscape looks cheaper on paper and is where quotations differ widely. A lawn can be natural grass on replaced soil with spray irrigation, or artificial grass on a compacted base with drainage and firm edges; the artificial surface usually costs more to lay and nothing to water, the natural one less to lay and then water, mowing and feeding every summer. Planting is priced by size as well as number: a hedge that screens the neighbour this winter is bought as mature plants, and a palm delivered at height may need a crane, while small plants cost less and take seasons to fill in. A quotation that says only 'planting' without sizes cannot be compared with one that does. Our garden design ideas for Dubai villas show the range these choices open up.

Structures, water, light and power
Everything here depends on services under the paving, so each item is simpler to plan with the garden than to add after it.
- Shade structuresIn Dubai shade decides which part of the garden is usable through the hot months. A pergola over the dining table, a gazebo or a covered terrace each needs footings, a frame and often lighting in the frame, and the material and span move the cost; our custom pergolas page sets out timber, aluminium, steel and composite in general terms.
- Outdoor kitchens and built seatingA fixed BBQ counter with a sink needs a water feed, a drain and power under the paving, so it is far simpler to include before the slabs go down than to cut them open later; see our outdoor kitchen and BBQ area page. Sunken seating and fire pits are structure too.
- The irrigation systemDrip lines for beds, bubblers for trees and palms, sprays or rotors for lawn and an automatic controller, with sleeves under paths so pipes can be reached later. The number of zones, the distance from the supply point and any existing paving the pipes must cross move this line, as our garden irrigation systems page explains.
- Drainage and water featuresWash-down water, the occasional heavy rain and pool splash have to go somewhere other than the beds and the villa, so channel drains belong in the scope. A water wall or fountain adds a pump, basin, waterproofing and power, and in the Dubai heat, evaporation and cleaning.
- The pool interfaceWhere a pool exists or is planned, the deck, coping, drainage, equipment room and pool lighting all meet the garden. Levels and services have to line up, and a garden quotation should say where its scope stops and the pool's starts.
- Lighting and power runsA Dubai garden is used after sunset for much of the year, so lighting is a working part of it. Path and step lights, uplights in the planting, strips under benches and a protected supply to the kitchen and the controller each add fittings and cable, laid before the paving closes over them; our outdoor and landscape lighting page covers the kinds of light.
Approvals, design and the order of work
A few decisions sit outside the materials list and still change what the garden costs.
Community approvals
Many Dubai communities and developers need to approve changes to a villa garden before work starts, and what they look at differs from one community to the next: the boundary wall, a pergola, external lighting and changes to levels may all be covered. The developer or community management may require a no-objection certificate; we confirm which approvals apply after the site visit and apply for them ourselves.
Design and 3D before the build
A garden drawn in 3D costs time at the start and saves it later: you see how wide a path really is and where the afternoon sun lands, and a planter moved on screen costs nothing. The approved 3D becomes the brief for the site team, so what is quoted is what gets built.
Phasing with a pool or a renovation
Doing the garden with a pool or a villa renovation lets one team set the levels and lay the services once; doing it later means working round finished surfaces. If the pool must wait, we design the garden with it in mind so it can be added without undoing the work, as our page on outdoor living planned as rooms explains.
The planting season
The cooler months, roughly October to April, are when new planting establishes in Dubai. Hard landscape can be built through the summer, but planting into the heat means more losses and more water, so a programme that puts ground works first and planting into the season protects the planting budget.
What your choices mean for maintenance afterwards
The cost does not stop at handover
Every choice above has a second cost that arrives every month. A natural lawn needs mowing, feeding, repair of dry patches and the water a Dubai summer takes from it; artificial grass needs brushing, clearing of sand and a check on joins and edges, especially beside a pool. Palms and hedges need pruning and a watch for pests. Planting on drip, grouped by water need, is easier to keep alive than a lawn sharing a zone with trees, and paving in place of lawn needs less water but more cleaning after a sandy wind.
Lighting, controllers and water features need checking too: a stopped dripper or a failed spike light is small when noticed and costly when not. Our garden maintenance for Dubai villas covers lawns, artificial grass, planting, irrigation, lighting and hard landscape on a regular round, and our garden maintenance calendar sets out what is done in which month. Deciding at design stage how much upkeep you will pay for is as much a part of controlling cost as the paving.

How to compare landscaping quotations
Two offers for the same garden can look far apart because they describe different gardens. These checks bring them back to one scope.
- Scope line by lineRemoval and disposal, soil replacement with depth and area, base and paving by type and area, walls and planters with foundations, irrigation by zone, lighting by fitting and circuit, structures, water features, drainage, planting with sizes, and approvals. When one offer is far lower, check which of these it leaves out.
- Exclusions written downWho pays for skips, a crane for the palms, the power connection to the controller, making good the side passage after deliveries and the watering-in while plants establish. If it is not written, it is not included.
- Plant sizes and grass type statedA palm 'supplied and planted' tells you nothing without its height, and 'lawn' nothing without natural or artificial, the base under it and the irrigation on it.
- One drawing behind every offerAsk each contractor to price the same approved drawing. A 3D design that fixes layout, materials and features is how you make sure the quotations describe one garden.
- Decide the big things firstHard against soft, natural against artificial grass, how much shade, a pool now or later, and how much upkeep you will pay for. Those decisions shape the cost; the planter or light fitting only adjusts it.
