Boundary wall design and decorative garden walls in Dubai

In most villa gardens the walls are the biggest surface you see. Treated well, they become the backdrop for everything else in the garden.

WHY THE

Why the wall matters more than it seems

Stand in a typical villa garden and look around: the boundary wall wraps three sides, often in the plain render the developer handed over. However good the pool or the planting, that blank face sets the tone. A decorative wall changes it: a clad boundary face, a planter wall that brings greenery to eye level, a slatted screen that hides a service yard, a lit niche behind a seating area, or a wall that water runs down into the pool. It also works in a small garden, because it adds character without taking floor area. This page covers walls inside your plot and the garden face of the boundary wall; general blockwork is on our masonry page.

KINDS OF

Kinds of decorative wall

01

Clad boundary face

The garden side of an existing boundary wall finished in stone, tile or panels, so the plain render becomes a designed surface.

02

Planter walls

Raised walls with planting built into the top or the face, sometimes with a built-in bench and lighting beneath it.

03

Lit niches and recesses

Openings set into the wall for a sculpture, a pot or a light, which give the wall depth after dark.

04

Slatted and perforated screens

Slats or patterned metal fixed in front of or on top of a wall to add privacy, hide equipment or cast shadows.

05

Water walls

A wall that carries a sheet or spout of water into a basin or the pool, adding sound as well as a view.

STRUCTURE COMES

Structure comes before the finish

A decorative finish is only as good as the wall behind it.

  • Condition of the existing wallCracks, damp patches and loose render are dealt with first, or the cladding will fail with them.
  • Foundations and heightNew feature walls and raised planters need foundations sized for their height and weight.
  • How the finish is fixedHeavy stone and light panels need different fixings, both able to cope with outdoor heat.
  • Water behind plantersPlanter walls hold wet soil, so they are lined and drained to keep moisture out of the wall and off the paving.
  • Heat and movementWalls in full sun expand and contract, so joints are planned to stop finishes cracking.
  • Services inside the wallCables for lights, pipes for a water wall and irrigation to planters are built in, not surface-mounted later.
FINISHES FOR

Finishes for an outdoor wall

  • Textured render and paintThe simplest change and the easiest to repair.
  • Natural stoneSplit-face, honed or stacked stone for a heavier, more permanent look.
  • Timber-look and composite slatsWarmer in tone, often used behind seating and pergolas.
  • Metal screensLaser-cut or slatted panels that let light and air through.
  • Green wallsPlanting set into or trained on the wall, with irrigation planned from the start.
LIGHT TURNS

Light turns a wall into a feature at night

Washing, grazing and hidden strips

Many decorative walls are seen most in the evening. A light set close to a textured wall and aimed along it brings out stone and render; light washed evenly across a smooth wall makes it glow behind planting; hidden strips under a shelf or bench make it look as though it floats.

These effects need cable routes and fixing points built into the wall, so we design walls and outdoor lighting together in 3D.

COMMUNITY RULES

Community rules on boundary walls

Boundary walls are one of the parts of a villa that communities most often control, because they are seen from the street and shared with neighbours. Height, colour, materials and anything fixed on top of the wall can be covered by community guidelines, and a shared wall may involve the neighbour too. Which approvals apply depends on your community and the scope; OutMazed applies for them itself and confirms what is needed after the site visit.

HOW WE

How we deliver a decorative wall

01

Project Study

A free site visit to check the wall's condition, what it is shared with and what it should do for the garden.

02

Plan

Finish, structure, lighting and any water or planting are agreed, and we apply for the approvals that apply.

03

Visualization

The wall is designed in 3D with the garden around it, by day and with its lighting at night.

04

Execution

Our in-house team carries out the masonry, services and finishes, managed by a dedicated project manager.

Duration depends on the work; a programme is given after the site visit.

WHAT CHANGES

What changes the cost

  • Length and heightHow much wall is finished, and whether scaffolding is needed.
  • Repair or rebuildA sound wall can be clad; a weak one may need repair or rebuilding first.
  • FinishRender and paint, cladding, natural stone, slats or metal screens.
  • Built-in elementsPlanters, benches, niches, water features and the lighting built into them. Whether the wall forms part of a wider pools and landscaping project also changes the scope.
FAQ

Questions and answers

Can you clad my existing boundary wall without rebuilding it?

Often yes, if the wall is sound. We check its condition on the site visit; damaged sections are repaired before any cladding goes on.

Do I need approval to change my boundary wall?

Often, especially for height, colour or anything visible from the street. It depends on your community and the scope, and OutMazed applies for the approvals itself.

What is a planter wall?

A raised masonry wall with planting built into it, usually lined and drained so wet soil does not damage the wall. It can include a bench and lighting.

Can a wall have water running down it into the pool?

Yes. A water wall needs a pump, pipes and a power supply built into the structure, so it is designed together with the pool.

Can you hide AC units or pool equipment behind a screen?

Yes. Slatted or perforated screens can hide equipment while leaving the airflow and access it needs.

Can you build a plant wall for a villa in Dubai?

Yes. A green wall has planting set into or trained on the wall, with irrigation planned from the start, and a planter wall brings planting to eye level in a raised wall that is lined and drained. Both are designed in 3D with their lighting.

Will I see the wall before it is built?

Yes. Every design is produced in 3D before execution, and the site visit is free.
