Pleated insect screens, retractable and concealed

A pleated net screen folds into a slim stack beside a door or window when you do not need it, and slides across when you do. We measure, supply and fit retractable and concealed systems as part of the opening they serve.

HOW A

How a pleated screen works

A pleated insect screen uses a mesh folded like an accordion, held in a slim frame fixed around the opening. Pull the handle and the pleats open out across the door or window; push it back and they fold into a compact stack at the side. Inside the frame, fine cords keep the pleats evenly spaced and the mesh taut, so the screen can be stopped part-way and stays where you leave it. Because the mesh folds rather than rolling onto a spring, there is no snap-back, and the system can cover the wide openings common in Dubai villas, from large sliding doors to bifold doors that open a living room to the garden. The aim is simple: keep mosquitoes, flies and other insects outside on the evenings you want the doors open, without a screen that is in the way the rest of the time.

RETRACTABLE AND

Retractable and concealed systems

01

Retractable screens

A slim frame fixed to the face or inside the reveal of the opening. The screen folds to one side, or to both sides for a wide opening, with the two halves meeting in the middle.

02

Concealed screens

The frame is recessed into the wall reveal, the ceiling or the door frame, so when the screen is folded away there is almost nothing to see. This needs planning before finishes, or a suitable reveal.

03

Low threshold track

A very low bottom track, or a track set into the floor, so there is no real step to trip over or catch the cleaning when walking between living room and terrace.

04

Windows

Smaller pleated screens for casement and sliding windows, folding sideways or vertically, so windows can be opened in the cooler months.

WHAT TO

What to decide for each opening

  • Width and heightLarge openings may need a double screen meeting in the middle.
  • Which way it foldsTo the side with the most wall space, clear of furniture and handles.
  • Mounting positionInside the reveal, on the wall face, or concealed in the ceiling or frame.
  • ThresholdSurface track, low track or track recessed into the floor finish.
  • Frame colourMatched to the door and window frames so the screen does not stand out.
  • How the door opensThe screen has to work with sliding, folding or hinged doors without clashing with them.
PLANNING SCREENS

Planning screens with the doors and windows

Easier when the opening is still being built

Concealed screens and recessed floor tracks depend on what is built around the opening. If a villa is being renovated, or doors are being replaced, we can leave the recess in the ceiling, reveal or floor so the screen disappears completely. On an existing door, a retractable screen can usually be fitted to the face or the reveal without any building work.

Dubai's dust and sand settle in tracks and mesh. A pleated mesh can be cleaned with a soft brush or a vacuum, and keeping the bottom track clear keeps the screen running smoothly. We explain the care of the system when we hand it over.

FAQ

Questions and answers

What is the difference between a pleated screen and a roller screen?

A roller screen winds the mesh onto a spring-loaded roller. A pleated screen folds the mesh into a stack and stays where you leave it, which suits wide openings and doors used often.

Can pleated screens be fitted to large sliding or bifold doors?

Yes. Wide openings can take a double screen that meets in the middle. We measure each opening before recommending a system.

Will a pleated screen block the view?

When it is folded away it takes up only a narrow strip at the side. When it is closed, the fine mesh lets you see out and lets air through.

Can the screen be hidden completely?

A concealed system is recessed into the reveal, frame or ceiling. This is easiest during a renovation or when doors and windows are being replaced.

How do I clean it?

Brush or vacuum the mesh gently and keep the bottom track free of sand and dust.

Do you fit screens to windows as well as doors?

Yes, pleated screens are made for windows as well as doors.
