Outdoor and landscape lighting in Dubai

For much of the year a Dubai garden is used after sunset. We plan the lighting with the garden itself, so paths, planting, structures and the pool are lit the way you will use them at night.

WHY LIGHTING

Why lighting matters more in a Dubai garden

Through the hottest months the garden is used mostly in the evening, which means it is seen under artificial light at least as much as daylight. Good outdoor lighting makes the garden safe to walk through, shows off planting and structures, and sets the mood for dinners and gatherings. It works best when it is planned with the layout, because cables run under paving and planting, fittings are built into steps, walls and pergolas, and pool lighting is part of the pool build. At OutMazed® Design outdoor lighting is part of the landscaping scope and is drawn into the 3D design before anything is built.

KINDS OF

Kinds of outdoor lighting

01

Path and step lights

Low lights along paths, stepping stones and steps, so routes are visible without glare.

02

Spike lights and uplights

Small lights in the planting aimed up at palms, trees and shrubs, turning planting into a night-time feature.

03

Underlights and hidden strips

Light strips tucked under benches, planters, steps and floating bases, so structures appear to float.

04

Wall and facade lights

Wall-mounted fittings that wash cladding and boundary walls and light seating areas.

05

Pool lighting

Underwater and perimeter lighting that lights the water and outlines the pool edge.

06

Structure lighting

Lighting built into pergolas, gazebos, outdoor kitchens and BBQ counters for cooking and dining after dark.

WHAT TO

What to decide in the design

  • What is used at nightDining, cooking, the pool and the routes between them come first; decorative lighting follows.
  • Glare and neighboursFittings are aimed and shielded so light falls on the garden, not into eyes, bedrooms or next door.
  • LayersA mix of low path light, accent light on planting and working light at the kitchen gives depth instead of one flat wash.
  • Cable routesCables and sleeves are laid before paving and planting, with power points placed for future additions.
  • WeatherFittings must be rated for outdoor use, heat, dust and, near the pool and irrigation, water.
  • ControlLights grouped into circuits or scenes so the garden is not all on or all off. Automation can be included in the scope.
LIGHT BUILT

Light built into the structure

Floating bases and planter walls at Project Murano

On Project Murano in Al Furjan the outdoor scope included a pergola with a floating base and underlights, a planter wall with a floating bench and underlights, a BBQ countertop with cabinets, and other lighting works. The light is hidden under each element, so at night the structures seem to hover above the grass.

Effects like this cannot be added afterwards. The recess for the strip, the cable route and the power point are part of the joinery and civil work, which is why we design lighting in 3D with the structures it belongs to.

HOW WE

How we deliver it

01

Project Study

A free site visit, ideally including a look at the garden after dark, to see how it is used and where light is missing.

02

Plan

Fittings, circuits, cable routes and power points are drawn on the garden plan. We apply for the approvals the wider work needs.

03

Visualization

The garden is shown in 3D so you can see where lighting is placed in relation to the layout and structures.

04

Execution

Cables and sleeves go in with the groundwork; fittings are fitted as paving, planting and structures are finished.

Duration depends on the work; a programme follows the site visit.

WHAT CHANGES

What changes the cost

The main drivers are the number and type of fittings; the length of cable runs back to power; whether lighting goes into a new garden or has to be added under existing paving and planting; integration into structures such as pergolas, planters and steps; pool lighting; the number of circuits and whether automation or scene control is included; and the fittings chosen. A quotation follows the site visit.

FAQ

Questions and answers

Can lighting be added to a garden that is already finished?

Often, yes, but cables may have to run under existing paving or planting. It is simplest when lighting is planned with the garden.

Do you light swimming pools?

Yes. Project Casa Colonia has integrated underwater and perimeter LED lighting around the pool.

What are spike lights?

Small fittings on a ground spike placed in planting and aimed at plants or trees. Project Bold uses plant spike lights.

How do floating benches and pergolas get their glow?

A light strip is set under the edge of the bench, planter or base. The recess and cable route are built in during construction, as on Project Murano.

Can the lights be automated?

Outdoor automation can be part of the scope, as on Project Casa Colonia. We discuss control options on the site visit.

Will the lighting disturb my neighbours?

Fittings are aimed and shielded so light stays in your garden. This is planned in the design stage.

Do you do lighting for terraces and balconies?

Yes, as part of an outdoor or landscaping project.

Is the site visit free?

Yes. The site visit is free.
