Outdoor flooring for Dubai gardens: interlock, stone, porcelain, WPC and grass

One material rarely suits a whole plot. This guide matches interlock, stone, porcelain, composite decking, artificial grass and rubber to the driveway, patio, side passages, lawn and play corner of a Dubai villa, and explains what moves the cost of each.

WHAT OUTDOOR

What outdoor flooring has to cope with in Dubai

Outdoor flooring is every surface you walk, sit, park and play on outside the house: the driveway and front path, the patio by the kitchen, the side passages, the lawn and the play corner. In a Dubai villa it has a harder life than the floor indoors: it bakes in afternoon sun, takes blown sand for much of the year, gets wet from irrigation and the occasional downpour, and carries bare feet, bicycle tyres and car wheels. The right choice is rarely one material for the whole plot. Most gardens work well with a few, each matched to its job: interlock tiles where cars turn, stone or porcelain where people sit and eat, decking where a warmer surface suits, artificial grass where a lawn is wanted without the watering, and rubber where children fall. This guide compares those materials for paths, patios, driveways, play areas and lawns, and explains what moves the cost of each, because the figures depend on the site. The area immediately around a swimming pool is covered in our pool deck ideas. For how the surfaces fit the wider layout, see our garden design ideas for Dubai villas; our landscape design team plans paving, decking and grass with the planting and lighting, and shows you the result in 3D before anything is laid.

INTERLOCK TILES

Interlock tiles for driveways, paths and parking

The surface for anything with wheels

Interlock tiles are concrete pavers made in shapes that lock against their neighbours. They are laid on a compacted base and a bed of sand, with sand brushed into the joints, so the surface spreads weight across many pavers rather than through one slab. That is why they suit driveways, parking bays and the turning area in front of a garage: a car can brake and turn on them without cracking the surface, and a stained or damaged paver can be lifted and replaced on its own. In Dubai the base matters more than the paver. Sand moves, so a deep, well-compacted base and a firm edge restraint keep the pavers from creeping and the joints from opening. Pavers come in rectangles, squares and hexagons, in sand, grey, charcoal and terracotta tones. Herringbone locks tightly and suits driveways, running bond and basket-weave suit paths, and a mix of sizes makes a front path look less like a car park. Pale tones reflect heat but show tyre marks; charcoal hides marks but stores heat into the evening.

Colour and finish move the price of interlock less than people expect; the thickness of the paver, the depth of the base and what has to be removed first move it more, and the section on cost below goes through them. Our interlock tiles and paving page covers what we build. In Project Majestic in Al Twar, grey block paving fronts the gazebo garden, and the same transformation included a custom-built parking area.

NATURAL STONE

Natural stone and porcelain for patios and terraces

Where people sit, eat and walk barefoot, the surface is chosen for how it looks and feels as much as for what it carries, and outdoor tile design is as much about joints, falls and borders as about the tile.

01

Limestone, sandstone and travertine

Pale sedimentary stones give a terrace the sand-coloured, resort look and stay cooler underfoot than dark finishes. They are porous, so they need sealing against barbecue fat and irrigation stains; a brushed or tumbled surface gives grip without roughness.

02

Granite and basalt for hard wear

Dense stone takes wheels, furniture legs and long use with little wear, and suits steps, edges and a front entrance. Dark granite stores heat in full sun, so use it in shade, or choose a lighter granite with a flamed finish for grip.

03

Porcelain outdoor tiles

Thick porcelain pavers made for outdoor use absorb almost no water, so stains, salt and irrigation rarely mark them and the colour holds in the sun. They come in stone, concrete and wood looks, so a terrace can match the tiles inside the sliding doors. Choose the outdoor slip rating, not the indoor version of the same design.

04

Outdoor tile design: patterns and borders

A plain field with a contrasting border, a lighter tone around the seating and a darker one for the route, or hexagon pavers running out into the lawn all give a patio a design without adding materials. Keep the palette to a pair of tones so the garden stays calm.

05

Joints, falls and movement

Outdoor tiles for a garden need properly filled joints, a fall away from the house so water drains to the lawn or a channel, and movement joints across large areas. Stone, porcelain and the slab beneath them move in the heat, and a terrace laid tight can crack or lift.

WPC DECKING

WPC decking for seating areas and changes of level

Warm underfoot, with the upkeep of timber left out

Wood-plastic composite, or WPC, is decking made from wood fibre bound in plastic. It gives the warmth and look of a timber deck without the splintering, sanding and regular oiling that real wood needs in the Dubai sun, and it resists termites. The boards are fixed to a frame of joists over a firm base, which is what makes decking useful in a garden with levels: a raised deck can sit over an uneven slab and give a seating area a floor a step above the lawn. Composite still warms in direct sun, and darker boards warm more than pale ones, so a shaded seating corner suits it better than an open, west-facing terrace. Where the warmth is wanted without a raised frame, wood-look planks give a similar look: in Project Alpha in Damac Hills 2, a seating corner sits on wood-look planks edged by artificial grass under a slatted shade structure, and Project Bold, also in Damac Hills 2, has a raised wood-look platform with a lit edge beside its artificial grass.

Ventilation under the deck, so that irrigation water and heat can escape, is most of the difference between boards that lie flat and boards that cup, and the frame decides the cost as much as the boards do. Our WPC decking page covers the board types. Where a deck meets a lawn or a lower terrace, floating steps with light underneath turn the change of level into part of the design rather than a trip hazard.

ARTIFICIAL GRASS

Artificial grass and rubber flooring for lawns and play areas

The soft surfaces carry the parts of the garden that children and pets use most, and they suffer first when the choice is wrong.

01

Artificial grass as the lawn

Artificial grass gives a green surface with no irrigation, mowing or brown patches, which is why it appears in so many Dubai gardens. It is laid on a compacted, free-draining base over a weed membrane, and the pile height, density and mix of blade colours decide whether it reads as a lawn or as a carpet. Our artificial grass page covers the base, edges and drainage under it.

02

Keeping it cool

Synthetic grass gets hot in full afternoon sun. A lighter blade mix, shade over the part used for sitting and a rinse before people go out barefoot all help, and real planting around it keeps the air cooler.

03

Stepping stones through grass

Large pavers set into artificial grass carry the route to the gate, the bins or the side passage, so the grass is not worn along one line and can run right up to the walls. Project Alpha and Project Bold in Damac Hills 2 both use stepping stones in artificial grass, lit at night.

04

Rubber flooring where children fall

Under a swing, a slide or a climbing frame, a poured rubber surface cushions a fall in a way that artificial grass and paving do not. It is laid wet in place, so it follows curves and gentle slopes, and it comes in colours that can mark out a play zone or sit quietly in the garden. Our rubber play flooring is laid as part of a play area built with the rest of the garden, with artificial grass around the pad and no hard paving within falling distance of a swing.

MATCHING THE

Matching the material to the area

Walk the plot area by area and ask what each surface has to carry, how hot it gets and who uses it barefoot.

  • Driveway and parkingInterlock tiles in a thickness made for vehicles, in a tight pattern, on a deep base with a kerb or edge restraint.
  • Front path and entranceLarge slabs in stone or porcelain, or slabs with lawn or pebbles between them, make a calmer welcome than the driveway surface running on to the door, as the slab path in lawn strips does in Project Majestic in Al Twar.
  • Patio and dining terraceStone or porcelain in a pale tone, laid with proper falls and close to the kitchen so plates do not cross the garden. Porcelain is the choice when the floor should match the tiles indoors.
  • Seating corner and levelsWPC decking where a warmer, softer surface suits, especially under a pergola or where a raised floor hides an old slab or bridges a change of level.
  • Side passagesStepping slabs in artificial grass or pebbles keep a narrow, rarely used strip green and tidy without a full paved path.
  • LawnArtificial grass where there is no one to mow and water, natural lawn only where it is used and watered by drip, and gravel or pebbles where neither is needed. Our guide to desert landscaping and xeriscaping covers the water-wise options.
  • Play areaRubber flooring under the equipment, artificial grass around it, and the corner placed where it can be seen from the kitchen.
WHAT CHANGES

What changes the cost, whatever the material

Searches for interlock price or outdoor tile rates return a figure per square metre, and that is rarely what a garden ends up costing. These are the things that move it, for stone, porcelain, decking and grass as much as for interlock.

01

What is there now

Breaking out old paving, lifting a dead lawn or clearing a sand yard, and taking the waste off site, comes before anything is laid. A level, compacted garden costs less to prepare than one that is not.

02

The base and the drainage

A driveway base is deeper than a path base, a terrace needs falls and often a channel drain, and a deck needs a frame. The part you never see is often the larger share of the work.

03

Access

A back garden reached only through the house means materials go in and waste comes out by hand, which adds labour to the same area.

04

Pattern, cutting and edges

Straight runs of a single format are quick. Herringbone, borders, curves, hexagons and steps mean more cutting, more waste and more time, and every edge needs a kerb, a trim or a restraint.

05

The grade of the material

Vehicle-grade pavers, thick porcelain, solid rather than hollow composite boards and dense, tall-pile grass all cost more than their lighter versions, and are the right call where the use justifies it.

FAQ

Questions and answers

Which outdoor flooring suits a driveway in Dubai?

Interlock tiles in a vehicle-grade thickness, laid in a tight pattern on a deep compacted base with a firm edge restraint. They carry turning cars without cracking, and a single damaged paver can be lifted and replaced.

What affects the price of interlock tiles?

Mostly what is under and around them: the depth of the base, whether an old surface has to be removed, access to the site, the pattern and the cutting, kerbs and drains, and the thickness of the paver. Colour and finish matter less than the area and the preparation.

Do outdoor porcelain tiles get hot in the sun?

Yes, like any surface left in full afternoon sun, but a pale porcelain holds far less heat than a dark one, and the gap between a light and a dark tone is wider than the gap between porcelain and stone. Shade over the seating matters most.

Is WPC decking better than real wood in Dubai?

For most villa gardens, yes. Composite does not splinter or need regular oiling in the heat, and it resists termites. It still needs ventilation underneath and shade if people will sit on it barefoot in summer.

Does artificial grass get too hot to walk on?

In full sun at midday it can, which is why we put shade over the part of the lawn people sit on, choose a lighter blade mix and surround it with real planting. A quick rinse with the hose before the children go out also helps.

Do we need approval to change the garden flooring, and can you handle all of it?

Driveways, front gardens and anything visible from the street usually need community approval, and some communities ask about back gardens too. We confirm what applies and apply for it ourselves, design the surfaces with the planting and lighting in 3D, and lay interlock, stone, porcelain, decking, grass and rubber with our own team. If a new swimming pool is part of the plan, the pool, its deck and the garden are designed together.
