Pergola on a floating base with underlights beside stepping stones set in artificial grass, Project Murano, Al Furjan

Floating steps for pools and gardens in Dubai

Floating steps are treads that seem to hover, with their support set back out of sight and often a line of light underneath. They work at a pool entry, between garden levels and up to a terrace.

WHAT MAKES

What makes a step look like it floats

A normal step sits on its full footprint, so you see a solid block. A floating step is supported further back than its front edge, so the nose of each tread overhangs and casts a shadow line underneath. With a strip of light tucked into that gap, the effect is stronger at night: the tread looks like a slab suspended over the water, the lawn or the paving. The same idea is used in two places in a villa. Inside the pool, floating steps replace a chunky corner staircase with a lighter entry. In the garden, they carry you between levels, from the house to the pool deck or from a terrace down to the lawn, without a heavy flight of stairs dominating the view.

WHERE FLOATING

Where floating steps are used

01

Pool entry

Treads that step down into the water, often running the full width of the shallow end so the entry reads as part of the design rather than an add-on.

02

Over water

Steps or slabs that cross a reflecting pool or a water feature, so you walk over the water on the way to a seating area.

03

Between garden levels

Where the plot changes height, floating steps link a raised terrace, a pool deck and the lawn with a lighter look than a solid stair.

04

Up to a terrace or door

A short run of floating steps at a back door or a raised deck makes a plain change of level into a feature.

05

Stepping stones in the lawn

On flat ground, a path of slabs set in grass or pebbles gives a related look without any change of level.

WHAT TO

What to decide in design

  • Rise and depth of each treadComfortable steps matter more than the effect. In the pool, treads are usually wider and deeper so people can sit on them.
  • How much overhangThe deeper the shadow line, the stronger the floating look. The structure behind sets the limit.
  • Hidden structureEach tread needs a support that is sized for its span and load and kept out of view.
  • Lighting under the noseA continuous light line under each tread shows the edge clearly at night, which is a safety point as much as a visual one.
  • Surface finishWet treads, in or beside the pool, need a slip-resistant surface; surfaces in full sun should stay comfortable underfoot.
  • How they meet the pool and gardenWhere the steps start and land, and how they line up with paving joints, the pool edge and planting.
THE SAME

The same detail, used elsewhere in a garden

Floating bases, underlights and stepping stones at Project Murano

Project Murano in Al Furjan did not include floating steps, but it shows the detail that makes them work. The outdoor scope included a pergola with a floating base and underlights, a planter wall with a floating bench and underlights, and carefully crafted stepping stones, together with a BBQ countertop with cabinets.

A base or bench that is set back from its edge and lit from beneath gives the same suspended look that floating steps rely on. In a garden design, repeating that detail on the steps, a bench and a pergola base ties the spaces together.

HOW WE

How we deliver floating steps

01

Project Study

On the free site visit we measure levels, look at the pool or the slope, and agree where steps are needed.

02

Plan

The scope and structure are agreed, and we apply for the approvals your community and scope require.

03

Visualization

The steps are modelled in 3D with the lighting, so you see the floating effect by day and night before it is built.

04

Execution

Our in-house team builds the structure and finishes, with one dedicated project manager as your point of contact.

WHAT CHANGES

What changes the cost

  • Number and width of treadsA full-width pool entry is more work than a short garden flight.
  • In the water or on landSteps inside a pool are built with the pool structure and need waterproof detailing.
  • Span and overhangLonger, deeper overhangs need more structure behind them.
  • Finish and lightingThe tread surface and the lighting under each step.
  • New build or retrofitAdding floating steps to an existing pool or slope means working around what is there.
FAQ

Questions and answers

What are floating steps?

Steps whose support is set back from the front edge, so each tread appears to hover. They are often lit from underneath to strengthen the effect at night.

Can floating steps be built inside a swimming pool?

Yes. In a pool they replace standard corner steps with a lighter entry, and they are built as part of the pool structure.

Can you add floating steps to an existing pool?

It depends on the pool's structure and shallow end, which we check on the site visit. It is usually done as part of a pool renovation.

Are floating steps safe?

They are designed with comfortable rises, a slip-resistant surface where they get wet, and lighting so each edge is visible after dark.

Do floating steps only work with water?

No. They are also used between garden levels, up to a terrace and at back doors. On flat ground, stepping stones give a related look.

Will I see them before they are built?

Yes. Designs are produced in 3D before execution, including the lighting.

Do I need approval?

That depends on your community and the scope of work. OutMazed applies for the approvals itself.
