Green walls and vertical gardens in Dubai

A green wall puts planting on a villa's largest spare surface: its walls. We design the frame, irrigation and lighting together and build it ourselves.

WHAT A

What a green wall is and where it suits

A green wall, or vertical garden, is planting grown on the face of a wall instead of in the ground in front of it: in panels, pockets or planters on a frame, or climbing a trellis, with its own drip irrigation. In a Dubai villa it suits places with little floor area but a large blank surface: the garden side of a boundary wall, a courtyard or side passage, a balcony, the wall behind a pool, the entrance wall, and, as an option we can arrange, indoors as a feature wall. It pairs naturally with our boundary and garden wall work.

KINDS OF

Kinds of green wall

01

Modular living wall

Planted panels or troughs on a frame, each with its own growing medium and drip line: usually the fullest cover, and the heaviest and most dependent on irrigation.

02

Climbers on a trellis

Rooted in a bed at the foot of the wall and trained up a trellis, mesh or wires; slower to fill in, but usually the lightest and easiest to water.

03

Planted pockets

Fabric or rigid pockets on a backing board, each holding a plant or a small group; light and easy to replant, but quick to dry out.

04

Preserved foliage walls

Real moss or foliage treated to keep its colour without water or light; indoor only, out of direct sun. An option we can arrange where a living wall is not practical.

05

Artificial green walls

Synthetic foliage panels: no watering or light, though they read as artificial close up. Another option we can arrange for fully exposed walls.

THE STRUCTURE

The structure behind the plants

  • Frame and fixingA metal or treated frame sized for the wet weight of soil and plants, anchored to a sound wall or free-standing where a parapet or light partition cannot carry it; on upper floors the slab is checked too.
  • Backing and waterproofingA membrane or board between the planting and the wall, so moisture never reaches the render.
  • Drip irrigation and drainageA line along each row with a filter and controller, and a base tray that takes run-off to a drain rather than the paving or pool.
  • LightingLights that graze the foliage, cabled inside the frame and planned with the outdoor lighting.
SUN, SHADE

Sun, shade and the Dubai summer

Orientation decides what will grow

A wall facing the afternoon sun in high summer is the hardest place in a garden to keep anything alive: leaves scorch and pockets dry out quickly. A shaded or north-facing wall, a courtyard the house shades for part of the day, or a wall under a pergola does far better; on a fully exposed wall we suggest climbers, overhead shade or an artificial wall.

Plant choice follows the orientation: hardy evergreen species with small, waxy or silvery leaves cope with heat and glare, trailing kinds soften the edges and upright kinds give body. The flowering climbers common on Dubai boundary walls grow fast on little water; plants that want cool shade and constant moisture belong indoors or in a sheltered courtyard. We agree the mix on the site visit and show it in the 3D landscape design.

WATER AND

Water and upkeep habits

  • Filter and emitter checksA single blocked emitter can dry out a whole section before anyone notices.
  • Pruning and feedingGrowth is cut back so it does not shade the rows below or pull on the fixings; feed goes in through the irrigation.
  • Replacing failuresSome plants fail, especially after a hot summer; they can be swapped singly without disturbing the rest.
  • Seasonal adjustmentWatering goes up through summer and down in winter, by the owner or as part of garden maintenance visits with the rest of the irrigation.
GREEN WALLS

Green walls indoors

An indoor green wall lives or dies by light: away from a large window it needs its own grow lighting. Indoor living walls can be arranged as part of a wider project; the build follows the outdoor one, but the tray drains to a hidden tank or waste pipe. Where light is poor, a preserved foliage wall gives the look with nothing to run, and its frame and surround can be made by our in-house joinery team.

HOW WE

How we deliver it

01

Project Study

A free site visit to check the wall, its orientation and shade, and where water, power and drainage come from.

02

Plan

Type of wall, frame, waterproofing, irrigation, drainage and lighting are agreed, and we apply for whichever approvals your community requires.

03

Visualization

The wall in 3D with the garden or room around it, by day and lit at night.

04

Execution

Our in-house team builds the frame and services, fits and plants the wall, with a dedicated project manager as your single point of contact.

Duration depends on the work; a programme is given after the site visit.

WHAT CHANGES

What changes the cost

  • Area and heightHow much wall is covered and whether a scaffold is needed.
  • System typeWhether it is climbers on a trellis, planted pockets or modular living panels, and how much frame, growing medium and irrigation each needs.
  • Services and wall conditionWhether irrigation, drainage and power are near the wall, and whether it needs repair first.
  • SettingIndoor grow lighting and joinery, and whether it is part of a wider landscaping project.
FAQ

Questions and answers

Can a green wall survive the Dubai summer?

Yes, in the right place with reliable drip irrigation. A shaded or north-facing wall with hardy evergreen plants does well; in full afternoon sun we may suggest climbers, shade or an artificial wall.

Will it damage my wall?

Not with a waterproof backing behind the planting and a drain at the base; staining on green walls usually comes from skipping that layer.

Is a vertical garden the same as a green wall?

They mean the same thing. Living wall usually means planted panels or pockets; vertical garden also covers climbers and stacked planters.

Can I have one on a balcony?

Often, yes. Wet weight and fixing into a parapet are the issues, so we check the slab and wall first; pockets and climbers suit upper floors better.

Does it need its own irrigation?

A living wall is hard to hand-water reliably, so each row has a drip line with a filter and controller. Climbers rooted in a bed share the bed's irrigation.

Do I need approval for a green wall?

It depends on the community and where the wall sits; some walls need none, others do. OutMazed applies for approvals itself and confirms what applies after the site visit.
