Contemporary is not the same as modern
The two words are often used as if they meant the same thing. Modern usually refers to a style that emerged in the twentieth century: flat roofs, clean lines, white walls, steel and glass. Contemporary simply means of the present time, so it changes. Contemporary design today tends to mix the clarity of modernism with warmer materials, softer curves, natural textures and more attention to climate. In Dubai that often shows up as timber and stone-effect finishes next to plain render, slatted screens that filter sun and give privacy, shaded terraces and gardens treated as outdoor rooms.
Features of contemporary villa design
Warm minimalism
Clean lines and little ornament, but with timber, textured plaster and fabric so rooms do not feel cold.
Screens and slats
Vertical slats on walls, pergolas and gates that filter light and break up views, a contemporary take on traditional shading.
Concealed lighting
Light washed from coves, under joinery and along steps rather than from visible fittings.
Outdoor rooms
Terraces, pergolas and garden seating designed with the same care as interiors.
Mixed materials
Stone-effect surfaces, timber, metal and plain render combined in a small, deliberate palette.
Applying a contemporary style to an existing home
Working with what is already there
Most villas in Dubai were built in a particular style, often with arches, columns and decorative mouldings. A contemporary redesign does not have to remove all of that. It can simplify the façade, replace dated details with clean ones and let new materials and lighting set the tone, while keeping the parts of the house that work.
We decide this with you at the Plan stage and show it in 3D, so you can judge how far to go. Changes to the outside of a villa usually need community approval, which we apply for. Extensions, a new façade or a rebuilt garden sit within the architectural changes to existing homes that we design and build ourselves.
