Concrete or fibreglass: which pool suits your Dubai villa?

A concrete pool is built in place and can take any shape, edge or feature you draw. A fibreglass pool is a one-piece shell made in a factory, craned into a prepared hole and finished on site. Both end up as a watertight pool in a Dubai garden, but they differ in what they allow, what they need from the plot and how they are looked after.

TWO WAYS

Two ways to build the same pool

The difference between the two is how the shell is made. A concrete pool is built in place, as reinforced concrete sprayed or poured around a steel cage or as block walls on a concrete base, rendered and waterproofed inside. A fibreglass pool is a single shell of glass-fibre-reinforced resin moulded in a factory, craned into a prepared excavation and finished with coping and a deck. We build swimming pools in both, so this is not an argument for one over the other; it sets out where each tends to win and lose on a Dubai plot. Our fibreglass pool installation page lists the checks that matter before a shell is ordered.

SHAPE, DEPTH

Shape, depth and the features you want

The features on your list settle most of the choice before access or cost come in.

01

Shape and size

Concrete follows any drawing: a lane down a side boundary, an L round a corner, a curve round a palm. A fibreglass shell is chosen from the shapes available as moulds, and its width is limited by what can travel on a road, so very wide pools are usually concrete.

02

Depth profile, steps and benches

Concrete takes whatever profile you draw: a shallow end for children, a deeper section for swimming, a bench, full-width entry steps. A shell arrives with its steps and seats moulded in, convenient when the standard layout suits the family and limiting when it does not.

03

Wet decks and sunken seating

A wide shallow ledge sized to your loungers is formed in the concrete structure, and a sunken structure for relaxation beside the water, as at Project Majestic in Al Twar, is built alongside it. Some shells include a shallow shelf of a set size. Our wet deck and tanning ledge page covers how the ledge is sized and shaded.

04

Infinity and overflow edges

A vanishing edge needs one wall set below the water line, a catch basin and precise levels; an overflow pool needs a perimeter channel and a balance tank. Both are far easier to build in concrete, which is what we usually recommend if you want one. Our infinity pool design page explains what the plot needs.

05

Glass panels and water features

A glass corner like the one on the skimmer pool at Project Miracle in The Villa is formed in the structure, and a cascade needs a raised block with a weir and its own feed pipe. A ready-made shell may or may not allow details like these, so say what you want before a shell model is chosen.

ACCESS, GROUND

Access, ground and the order of work

A shell arrives in one piece; concrete arrives as materials

The shell is lifted by crane into the excavation, so it needs a clear route in or a crane with enough reach to lift it over the house. Villa communities often have narrow roads, overhead cables, parked cars and limited working hours, and a townhouse with no side passage may have no route at all. A concrete pool needs access only for an excavator, the trucks that take the sand away and the materials. The lift route is the first thing we look at on the free site visit.

The sequence differs once the hole is dug. For concrete, steel is fixed, pipe sleeves and light niches are set, the shell is sprayed, poured or built in block and rendered, then it cures, kept damp and shaded in the summer heat. At Project Majestic in Al Twar the pit was built with block walls and reinforcement mesh before the pool was finished. Pool waterproofing follows, is tested, and only then does the tile go on. For fibreglass, the shell is levelled, plumbed and backfilled while it is filled with water so the pressure stays balanced, and the deck is built around it. Because most of the shell is made off site, the work in your garden is usually shorter. Our pool construction process guide follows the concrete sequence.

FINISHES, AND

Finishes, and how each pool lives with the Dubai climate

Surface and ground behave differently under long summers, wind-blown sand, salty ground water near the coast and a hard sun.

  • Tile, mosaic and plaster on concreteGlass mosaic, porcelain and natural stone give a concrete pool its colour and its water line. Mosaic follows curves and steps, large tiles suit straight walls, and a plaster interior is smoother and simpler but tends to show poor water balance sooner, which matters where dust and heat push the chemistry about.
  • Gel coat on fibreglassThe shell's surface is a smooth, non-porous gel coat that is gentle on feet and easy to brush. It comes in the colours the mould maker offers rather than a tile you choose. Balanced water and a soft brush look after it, and a damaged patch is repaired and colour-matched rather than retiled.
  • Heat and water temperatureIn August the water in an unshaded Dubai pool can be too warm to refresh, whatever the shell is made of. A pale interior, shade over part of the water and a chiller in the plant room matter more than the construction method, and a heater extends the season into winter. Equipment is sized to the water volume, so a shallow shell and a deep concrete pool need different kit.
  • Ground water and sandDubai gardens sit on sand, and near the coast and in low-lying communities the water table can fill the pit. A concrete shell is heavy and sits on a compacted base. A fibreglass shell is light, so its base and backfill are designed for the ground, and it is not left empty where the water table is high, because ground water can lift an empty shell.
  • Salinity and chemistryHumid coastal air and daily dust mean skimmers and filters work harder here than in a wetter climate. A gel coat tends to tolerate salt-water chlorination well; tile grout and plaster want their water balance watched.
MAINTENANCE, REPAIR

Maintenance, repair and the long view

Concrete is resurfaced; fibreglass is cared for

A concrete pool is a structure that outlasts its finishes. Over time the plaster or grout wears along the water line, and the fix is a resurfacing: strip the old interior, repair the render, re-waterproof where needed and tile or plaster again. That is also the moment to change the pool: a concrete shell can be cut, extended and re-formed, so corner steps become a full-width entry or part of the shallow end becomes a wet deck. Our pool renovation page lists what a renovation can change.

A fibreglass shell tends to ask for less year to year: the gel coat does not need resurfacing on the cycle a plaster pool does, tends to hold less algae and is brushed rather than acid-washed. In return it is harder to change: the shape, the steps and the depth are what they were on the day of the lift, and a damaged gel coat is repaired rather than replaced like a tile. The deciding question is less how long each lasts than whether you will want to change it.

WHICH SUITS

Which suits which plot

Each familiar Dubai plot type pushes the choice one way.

01

Townhouse gardens

A narrow strip behind the house, walled on both sides, usually with no side passage. A shell lifted over the roof is possible on some streets and impossible on others, and a compact concrete pool dug with small machines is often the simpler route. The shapes that fit are in our small pool ideas for townhouses.

02

Large villa plots

Room for a long pool, a separate spa, a wet deck and a pool house. Here the shell's size limit bites and the pool is usually concrete, planned with deck, shade and planting as one scheme by our landscape design team and shown in 3D first.

03

Sloping or stepped sites

A change in level is the natural home of an infinity edge or a raised pool dropping to a lower lawn, and both are concrete work. A shell wants a level base and level ground around it, so a stepped plot is levelled first or the shell is left aside.

04

Flat plots in master-planned communities

A plain rectangle on a flat plot with a driveway wide enough for a truck is where fibreglass is at its strongest: quick on site and little disturbance to the garden you keep. Whichever you choose, our outdoor living design page shows how the dining, lounge and shade are arranged around it.

APPROVALS AND

Approvals and how to read the quotation

Both pools need consent before anyone digs, and both are quoted for the site rather than from a list.

  • Who has to agreeIn a master-planned community the developer or its community management usually issues a no-objection certificate for the pool and any structure around it, and Dubai Municipality publishes guidelines for private swimming pools which state that a villa pool is registered with it before construction or installation starts. Which apply depends on your community and the scope; we apply for them ourselves.
  • Reading a concrete quotationLook for excavation and removal of sand, the shell with its steel and concrete or block, waterproofing as its own line, the interior finish by name, coping, the equipment listed item by item, lighting, deck, fencing and the reinstatement of lawn and irrigation.
  • Reading a fibreglass quotationLook for the shell model and its size, transport and the crane lift as a separate line, then excavation and base preparation, backfill, plumbing and equipment, coping and deck. Ask what happens to the price if the crane cannot reach from where the quotation assumes.
  • Compare the same scopeSet the two side by side only once both include the deck, the shade, the safety fence and the approvals. Our guide to what drives pool cost in Dubai explains each factor. Every quotation we give follows a free site visit.

FAQ

Questions and answers

Is a fibreglass pool cheaper than a concrete pool in Dubai?

It can be for some sites, but a shell still needs excavation, a base, plumbing, equipment, a deck and approvals, and the crane lift is a cost of its own. We build both and compare them for your garden after the free site visit.

Can a fibreglass shell be lifted over my house?

Sometimes, with a crane of the right reach. It depends on the plot, the road, overhead cables and the working hours your community allows, which is why the lift route is the first thing we check.

Can a fibreglass pool have an infinity edge or a glass panel?

Those details depend on how the pool walls and plumbing are built, and they are far easier in concrete. If either is on your list, concrete is the usual route.

Which is quicker to build?

The work in your garden is usually shorter for fibreglass, because the shell is made in advance; a concrete pool is built, cured, waterproofed and tiled on site. The overall time depends on the scope, and you receive a programme after the site visit.

Which copes better with Dubai heat?

Water temperature depends more on shade, the colour of the interior and whether you fit a chiller than on what the shell is made of. Both need the water kept cool in summer and both benefit from a cover.

Can a fibreglass pool be renovated later?

The deck, coping, lighting and equipment around it can be changed and the gel coat can be repaired, but the shape and depth are fixed. A concrete pool can be reshaped, extended and refinished.

Which do you recommend?

Neither by default. We build both and advise at the free site visit, based on the access, the ground, the features you want and the garden around the pool.
