Vinyl flooring in Dubai
Vinyl is a family of PVC-based floors that resist water, feel softer and quieter than tile, and can look like wood, stone or concrete. Choosing well means choosing the right kind of vinyl.

One name, several floors
Vinyl flooring is made mainly from PVC, built up in layers: a backing, a core, a printed design film and a clear wear layer on top, often with a protective coating. Because PVC does not absorb water the way wood fibre does, vinyl copes with spills and mopping far better than wood or laminate. Beyond that shared base, vinyl comes in quite different forms, and the form decides how it is laid, how it feels and where it works. Search terms in Dubai reflect that: people look for vinyl, vinyl click, LVT and SPC, often without knowing they are related. This page explains the family; LVT and SPC have pages of their own.
The main types of vinyl
Sheet vinyl
Supplied in wide rolls and laid with few or no seams. Practical and hygienic, mostly used in commercial, healthcare and utility spaces today.
Glue-down LVT
Flexible planks or tiles bonded to a smooth screed. Thin, quiet and suitable for patterns and borders.
Flexible click vinyl
Flexible planks with a locking edge that float over an underlay. Easy to lay but sensitive to an uneven base.
Rigid core (SPC)
A stiff stone-plastic core with a click system. More tolerant of small irregularities and widely used over existing tiles.
Vinyl in Dubai conditions
- WaterVinyl itself is water-resistant, which suits kitchens and family areas. Water that runs under the floor at the edges can still cause problems, so it is not a substitute for proper waterproofing in showers.
- Sun and heatPVC expands with heat. Next to large, sunny windows, floating vinyl needs generous expansion gaps, and blinds help protect the colour. Glue-down floors in strong sun need an adhesive suited to it.
- SandThe wear layer takes the abrasion. Entrance mats and regular vacuuming keep it looking new longer.
- AC and humidityVinyl is far less affected by humidity than wood, which makes it a good choice for villas that are closed up in summer.
- Comfort and soundSofter and quieter underfoot than tile, which helps in apartments and upper floors.
The base is everything
Thin floors show what is underneath
Flexible vinyl follows the surface it sits on. A grout line, a trowel mark or a grain of sand under a glue-down plank can show through as a line or a bump in low light. For glue-down floors the screed is usually smoothed with a levelling compound first; for click floors the base is checked for flatness and repaired where needed.
Rigid SPC is more forgiving and can often go over sound tiles. Either way, the screed has to be dry, and transitions to tiled areas, doors and skirting are planned so the floor finishes cleanly.
