WHAT SKIRTING

What skirting does

Skirting is the strip that runs along the bottom of a wall where it meets the floor. It covers the joint between the two, which is rarely perfectly straight, and on floating floors such as laminate and many wood floors it hides the expansion gap the floor needs around its edge. It also protects the bottom of the wall from vacuum cleaners, mops and furniture, which matters on painted walls. Because it runs around every room, skirting has a bigger effect on how finished a home looks than its size suggests. At OutMazed it is planned with the flooring, the doors and the joinery, so the height, profile and colour work with all three.

TYPES OF

Types of skirting

01

Painted MDF skirting

The most common choice in Dubai homes. Smooth, stable and easy to paint in the wall colour, a contrast colour or white.

02

Solid timber skirting

Stained or oiled to match a timber floor or wooden doors. It moves slightly with humidity, so joints are made to allow for it.

03

Flush and shadow-gap skirting

Set into the wall so its face is level with the plaster, or replaced by a small recessed gap. A clean, modern detail that has to be planned before plastering.

04

Tile and stone skirting

Strips of the floor tile or stone run up the wall, usual with tiled and marble floors and in wet areas.

05

Metal skirting

Aluminium or stainless steel profiles for a minimal look or for areas that are cleaned often.

WHAT TO

What to decide

  • HeightTaller skirting suits rooms with high ceilings; lower, simple skirting suits modern rooms.
  • ProfileSquare, bevelled or moulded, ideally matching the door architraves.
  • ColourThe wall colour makes skirting quiet; white or a contrast makes it a line around the room.
  • Match to the floorWood floors often get timber or painted skirting; tiled floors often get tile skirting.
  • Wet areasKitchens and laundries need skirting and kickboards that tolerate water and frequent mopping.
  • CablesSome skirting can carry low-voltage cables, if planned before fitting.
SKIRTING AND

Skirting and new floors

Why skirting is often replaced with the flooring

When a new floor is laid over an old one, the floor level rises and the existing skirting looks too short, or it has to come off so the new floor can run underneath. Floating floors also need a gap at the walls, which the skirting must cover. For these reasons skirting is usually removed and replaced as part of a flooring job, and it is the last carpentry item fitted before painting touch-ups.

Walls in many homes are not perfectly flat or square, so skirting is scribed and the corners are cut to meet cleanly. Doors may need trimming at the same time so they clear the new floor. Our project manager plans the flooring, skirting, doors and paint in that order so nothing is done twice.

FAQ

Questions and answers

Do you fit skirting on its own?

Skirting is usually fitted as part of flooring, joinery or renovation work. Tell us what you need and we will advise at the free site visit.

MDF or solid wood skirting?

Painted MDF is stable and smooth and suits most homes. Solid timber suits a stained or natural finish that matches wooden floors or doors.

Can skirting be flush with the wall?

Yes, but flush and shadow-gap skirting must be planned before the walls are plastered, so it is best decided at the start of a renovation.

Should skirting match the doors?

It usually looks best when the skirting and architrave profiles and colour are matched.

Do I need new skirting with a new floor?

Often, yes. The floor level changes and floating floors need an edge gap that the skirting covers.

How long does it take?

It depends on the work. We give you a programme after the site visit.
