A pool is a structure, a water system and the centre of the garden at the same time. When different firms build the shell, the decking and the landscaping, the problems sit between them: a deck at the wrong level, a light cable with nowhere to go, a balance tank in the only shaded corner. We take the whole job. OutMazed Design builds concrete and fibreglass pools, including skimmer, overflow, infinity and plunge pools and outdoor jacuzzis, and renovates existing pools. The same team builds the decking, pergolas, outdoor kitchens and planting around them, under one project manager.

The Department of Municipalities and Transport, which includes Abu Dhabi's three municipalities, announced in August 2025 a simplified permit process for minor works on villas and other residential properties. According to its announcement, the works covered include swimming pools, and the process allows contractors to secure the approvals directly through its Binaa permits platform, as long as the work complies with its safety and design standards. Your community or developer may also require its own NOC. We confirm the route for your villa and apply for the approvals ourselves.

Along the coast and on the islands, a villa plot can sit on sabkha or reclaimed ground, where the soil holds salt and groundwater can be close to the surface. Inland, the ground is usually drier sand. The site visit, and a ground check where the plot calls for one, tell us which you have, and the pool is engineered for it.

• ExcavationOn wet ground the excavation may need dewatering while the shell is built, and the sides need support so sand does not slump into the hole.
• Uplift on an empty poolA concrete or fibreglass shell sitting in groundwater behaves like a boat when it is empty. The structure is designed against uplift, with relief provisions, so the pool can be drained for maintenance without lifting.
• Salt and the structureSalt-laden ground is aggressive to concrete and reinforcement. Concrete mix, cover to the steel and an external protective layer are chosen for the ground conditions, and the shell is waterproofed before any finish goes on.
• Balance tanks and equipment pitsOverflow pools need a balance tank and every pool needs an equipment space. Both are placed where they stay dry and accessible, which on a wet plot usually means above ground or in a drained chamber.
• The deck and its drainageThe deck sits on a compacted, free-draining sub-base, falls lead splash and rain away from the villa and the pool, and backwash and overflow water is piped to an agreed outlet rather than soaking into the ground beside the shell.
