Landscaping for villa gardens in Abu Dhabi

Our team designs and builds complete villa gardens in Abu Dhabi: hardscape, planting, irrigation, shade, lighting and, where you want one, a pool. The whole garden is agreed in 3D before the first slab is laid.

A GARDEN

A garden is built in layers

A good villa garden is planned from the ground up. First come levels and drainage, so water from irrigation and the occasional storm runs away from the house. Then the services that disappear once the garden is finished: irrigation lines, cable ducts for lighting and power, and pipework for a pool or water feature. Only then the visible layer of paving, walls, planters, lawn and planting. In Abu Dhabi, where many plots are large and gardens wrap around the villa on several sides, getting these layers in the right order is what separates a garden that lasts from one that has to be dug up again. As a landscaping company that also builds pools, pergolas and outdoor kitchens, we plan all of it as one project.

WHAT OUR

What our landscaping work includes

01

Hardscape

Paving and interlock, paths and stepping stones, driveways, garden walls, planters, decking and fences.

02

Softscape

Natural lawn or artificial grass, trees, palms, shrubs and ground cover, chosen for sun and wind on your plot.

03

Irrigation

Drip and spray zones laid before planting, so each area gets the water it needs.

04

Shade and seating

Pergolas, gazebos, sunken seating and fire pits placed where the garden is actually used.

05

Outdoor kitchens and bars

BBQ and bar counters with storage, built with our in-house joinery.

06

Lighting and water

Path, wall and tree lighting, plus water features and fountains.

DESIGNING FOR

Designing for Abu Dhabi conditions

Heat, wind, salt and shade

Summer heat drives most garden decisions here. Shade has to come from structures and trees placed against the afternoon sun, and paving near seating should be a light, cooler surface. Wind matters on open plots at the edge of a community, where planters and walls can shelter a seating area.

Gardens close to the coast face humidity and salty air. Metal fixings, lights and furniture near the water need finishes that resist corrosion, and some plants cope with salt far better than others. We look at exposure on the site visit and choose plants and materials for it.

GARDEN APPROVALS

Garden approvals in Abu Dhabi

Work inside the plot and work outside it are treated differently. According to TAMM, the Abu Dhabi government services platform, planting and landscaping on spaces outside the boundaries of residential plots needs a permit from the Department of Municipalities and Transport, following its Off-Plot Works Manual. The Department has also announced a simplified permit route for minor works on villas, which it says covers items such as swimming pools, canopies and shaded structures, and fences. Your community or developer may have its own rules as well. We confirm what applies to your garden and apply for the approvals ourselves.

GROUND AND

Ground and water on Abu Dhabi plots

Parts of the coast and the islands sit on sabkha or reclaimed ground, where the soil holds salt and the water table can be close to the surface, while plots further inland are usually drier sand. We check which one you have on the site visit, because it changes what goes under the garden.

  • Salt in the groundSalt crust and salt-laden moisture attack mortar, steel and some stones from below. Paving on salt-affected ground needs a drained sub-base and a separating layer, and garden walls need a damp-proof course so salt does not climb through the render.
  • A high water tableWhere groundwater is close to the surface, sunken seating, fire pits and planting pits need positive drainage, and sometimes a raised design works better than a dug one.
  • Dry inland sandAway from the coast the ground drains fast and holds little water or nutrient. Planting beds are dug out and filled with a prepared soil mix, and the irrigation is zoned so trees, shrubs and lawn are watered separately.
  • Where the water goesIrrigation run-off and the occasional downpour need an outlet. We set falls across paving away from the villa and lead water to planted areas, a soakaway or an existing drain, and keep finished levels below the villa's damp-proof line.
WATER, SHADE

Choosing what will still look right after summer

Irrigation decides whether the planting survives. Drip lines under mulch put water at the root and lose little to evaporation, spray zones suit lawn, and a controller lets each zone run early in the morning before the heat. Salt-tolerant and drought-tolerant species, including native and adapted trees and shrubs, hold up on exposed and coastal plots where tender ornamentals struggle. See our guides to drip irrigation and plants for Gulf gardens.

Shade is designed, not added. Pergolas, gazebos and trees go on the western and southern sides of seating, and on island plots we favour aluminium frames, stainless or coated fixings, porcelain or stone paving and composite decking, which cope with humidity and salt better than untreated steel and softwood. Outdoor lighting is specified with sealed fittings for the same reason, and its cables run in ducts laid before the paving goes down.

FAQ

Questions and answers

Do you do landscaping in Abu Dhabi?

Yes. We work in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah as well as Dubai, from our office in SIT Tower, Dubai Silicon Oasis.

Do I need a permit for landscaping outside my plot?

According to TAMM, landscaping outside residential plot boundaries needs a permit under the Off-Plot Works Manual. We check this for your villa and apply for it.

Can you design the garden and build the pool together?

Yes. Pools, pergolas, outdoor kitchens and planting are planned in one design, so levels and services line up.

Natural lawn or artificial grass?

Both are possible. Natural lawn needs irrigation and care; artificial grass suits areas with heavy use or little sun. Many gardens use both.

Is the site visit free?

Yes, the first site visit is free.

How long does a garden take to build?

It depends on the work. We give you a programme after the site visit.

Do you really come from Dubai for an Abu Dhabi garden?

Yes. The site visit, the 3D design, the approvals and the build are all handled by our own team from the Dubai office, with joinery made in our workshop and installed at your villa.
