Compact pool with loungers and a shade umbrella in a landscaped villa garden, Project Jewel, The Villa

Plunge pools for smaller gardens in Dubai

A plunge pool is a small, deep-enough pool for cooling off, sitting in the water and relaxing rather than swimming lengths. It brings water into gardens, courtyards and terraces too small for a full pool.

WHAT A

What a plunge pool is for

The name comes from the cold plunge after a sauna, but in a Dubai garden it usually means a compact pool built for soaking, cooling down and sitting with a drink, not for exercise. It is small in footprint, often with a built-in bench or step to sit on, and deep enough to stand or sit with your shoulders under water. Because it is small it suits townhouse gardens, side yards, courtyards and roof terraces, and it leaves room for a lawn, a seating area or a play space beside it. It also takes less water to fill and treat than a full-size pool.

WHERE A

Where a plunge pool works

01

Townhouse back gardens

Many Dubai townhouse gardens are narrow. A plunge pool along one side keeps a usable lawn or deck on the other.

02

Courtyards and side yards

Set against a wall with a spout or cascade, it turns a leftover space into a feature you can see from inside the house.

03

Terraces and roofs

Water is heavy. A raised or roof plunge pool needs a structural engineer to confirm the slab can carry it before anything else is designed.

04

Beside a larger garden

In a big garden a plunge pool can sit near the outdoor kitchen or a shaded lounge as a second, more private water spot.

DESIGN CHOICES

Design choices

A small pool has less room for mistakes, so each decision counts.

  • Built-in seatingA continuous bench along one or two walls turns the pool into somewhere to sit and talk.
  • DepthDeep enough to sit with shoulders under water, shallow enough to stand comfortably. Discuss who will use it, including children.
  • In-ground or raisedA raised pool with a wide coping doubles as seating and can mean less digging. An in-ground pool keeps the garden visually open.
  • Jets or a spaMassage jets and heating can turn a plunge pool into a spa for winter evenings.
  • Concrete or fibreglassWe build in reinforced concrete for any shape, or in fibreglass where a ready-made shell suits the space and access allows.
KEEPING THE

Keeping the water pleasant in a Dubai summer

A small body of water heats up quickly. In July and August an exposed plunge pool can feel warm rather than refreshing.

01

Shade first

Placing the pool where the house, a wall or a pergola shades it in the afternoon helps more than anything else.

02

A lighter finish

A light pool finish absorbs less heat than a dark one and keeps the water looking fresh.

03

Chilling and heating

Pool chillers cool the water mechanically for those who want it cold in summer, and the same pool can be heated in the cooler months. Both need space and power near the plant room, so they are planned at the design stage.

HOW MUCH

How much garden the water takes

In a smaller garden the first question is footprint: how much ground the water takes, and how much stays lawn or seating. The two projects below answer it in different ways: a skimmer pool that shares the plot with landscaping and covered parking, and a sunken structure beside the pool that gives seating its own place. A plunge pool combines the two in one compact shape: built-in seating and enough depth to cool off, instead of length to swim.

HOW WE

How we build it

01

Project Study

On the free site visit we measure the space, look at access, check what is under the ground and where the sun falls through the day.

02

Plan

Size, depth, seating, construction type and equipment are agreed with the landscape around the pool, and you receive a programme.

03

Visualization

The pool and its surroundings are shown in 3D, so you can see how much garden is left and how it looks from inside the house.

04

Execution

Our in-house team builds the pool and the surrounding works. A dedicated project manager is your single point of contact.

We apply for the approvals required. Which ones apply depends on your community and the scope.

WHAT CHANGES

What changes the cost

  • Concrete or fibreglass construction
  • In-ground, raised or on a roof (with structural work)
  • Built-in seating, steps and any jets
  • Heating, chilling and filtration equipment
  • Finish and coping
  • Access: narrow side passages can mean digging by hand or smaller machines
  • Deck, shade and planting around it
FAQ

Questions and answers

What is the difference between a plunge pool and a small pool?

A plunge pool is designed for sitting and cooling off, often with built-in benches, rather than for swimming. A small swimming pool is laid out for a few strokes. The construction is similar.

Will my townhouse garden take one?

Often, yes. We check the space, access and what is below ground on the free site visit.

Can I swim in a plunge pool?

Not lengths. If swimming matters, a narrow lap pool along the garden may suit you better.

Can the water be kept cool in summer?

Shade and a light finish help most. A pool chiller can cool the water further; it needs space and power, so it is planned at the design stage.

Can a plunge pool double as a jacuzzi?

Yes. Adding jets and heating turns it into a spa pool for the cooler months.

Can it go on my roof terrace?

Only if a structural engineer confirms the slab can carry it. That check comes first.

Do you deal with approvals?

Yes, we apply for them. Which ones apply depends on your community and the scope.

How long does it take?

It depends on the work. You receive a programme after the site visit.
