Folding and bifold doors in Dubai

A folding door clears almost the whole opening, so a living room, majlis or kitchen can become one space with the terrace on the evenings when the weather allows it.

WHAT A

What a folding door is

A folding door, often called a bifold, is a row of narrow panels hinged to each other. When opened, the panels fold back in pairs, concertina-style, and stack against one or both sides of the opening, running on a track at the top, the bottom or both. Because nothing has to slide behind anything else, the opening can be almost completely clear, which a sliding door cannot offer. That is the appeal in a Dubai villa: from roughly October to April, a family room or majlis with its whole wall folded away works as an outdoor room. For the rest of the year the door spends most of its time closed against the heat, so how well it seals and how much glass it has matter just as much as how wide it opens.

FOLDING OPTIONS

Folding options

01

Glazed bifold doors

Full-height glass panels in slim frames. The usual choice between a living area and a garden or pool terrace.

02

Bifold windows

The same mechanism at counter height. A kitchen window that folds away over a worktop turns into a serving hatch to an outdoor dining or BBQ area.

03

Corner folding sets

Two runs that meet at a corner and both fold away, where the structure above allows the corner post to be omitted.

04

Traffic door

One panel works as an ordinary hinged door for daily use, so the whole set only needs folding when you want it fully open.

05

Internal folding doors

Solid or part-glazed folding doors between rooms, and lighter accordion-style partition doors, often PVC, used to close off a laundry, store or play area.

DESIGNING A

Designing a folding door that works every day

Stack, swing and seal

The stacked panels have to go somewhere. When folded they sit as a block at the side of the opening and project into the room or onto the terrace, so furniture, planters and lighting are placed around that stack. A retractable pleated mosquito net can share the same opening, folding into its own slim stack beside the doors and sliding across on the evenings they stay open. Panels can fold inwards or outwards; outward folding keeps the room free but needs clear terrace space and shelter from wind. An odd or even number of panels decides whether all of them go to one side or a traffic door is possible.

More panels means more vertical joints, and each joint is a seal that has to keep out heat and dust. A folding set facing west into the afternoon sun needs careful thought about glass and shading, and a pergola or overhang outside helps both comfort and the life of the seals. The threshold is chosen the same way as for a sliding door: flush for a seamless floor, or raised for better protection from sand and rain.

FOLDING OR

Folding or sliding?

Both suit wide openings. The right one depends on how you use the room.

  • Choose foldingWhen opening the full width matters more than the view while closed, and there is space for the stacked panels.
  • Choose slidingWhen the door stays closed most of the year and you want the biggest sheets of glass and fewest joints. See sliding doors.
  • Consider pivotFor a single wide entrance door rather than a garden opening, a pivot door is the usual alternative.
HOW WE

How we deliver it

01

Project Study

A free visit to measure the opening, check what supports the wall above it and look at the terrace and furniture layout.

02

Plan

Panel count, fold direction, stacking side, threshold and glass are fixed. Widening an opening is planned as structural work, and we apply for any approvals needed.

03

Visualization

You see the door open, closed and stacked in 3D, with the furniture in place.

04

Execution

Our team forms or prepares the opening, installs and aligns the tracks and panels, and finishes the floor and walls around it.

WHAT CHANGES

What changes the cost

Width and height, the number of panels, glass specification, frame material and finish, a flush threshold, corner configurations, any widening of the opening with new support above, and the finishing work inside and out. The quotation follows the site visit. Folding doors are one part of our interior fit-out and joinery work, and the finishing around the opening is quoted with the door.

FAQ

Questions and answers

What is the difference between folding and bifold doors?

They are the same thing. Bifold describes panels hinged in pairs that fold back on each other; folding door is the general name.

Do folding doors suit Dubai's summer?

They are closed for much of the summer, so choose glass and seals with that in mind and shade the outside if it faces the afternoon sun. In the cooler months they open the room to the garden.

Can my existing window be turned into a bifold door?

Often, by lowering the sill and possibly widening the opening. That is structural work, assessed at the site visit and approved where required.

Inward or outward folding?

Outward keeps the room clear but needs terrace space and some shelter. Inward keeps the stack protected but takes up room inside. We show both in 3D.

What are PVC folding doors used for?

Mostly as light accordion partitions inside the home, for example to close off a laundry, store or play area. They are not a replacement for an external glazed door.

Can a bifold window open onto an outdoor kitchen?

Yes, it is a common pairing. The counter heights inside and outside are planned together so the window works as a pass-through.

How long does installation take?

It depends on the opening and any structural work. You receive a programme after the site visit.
