Lap pools and Olympic-size pools in Dubai
If you want to swim, not just cool off, the shape of the pool matters more than its size. A long, narrow lap pool lets you swim lengths in a villa garden. A full Olympic pool is a different scale altogether.

Swimming lengths at home
A lap pool is built for exercise. It is long and narrow, with straight walls and a constant depth along most of its length, so you can swim continuously and turn at each end. Width matters less than length: a single lane is enough for one swimmer. That shape often fits Dubai villa plots better than a wide leisure pool, because it can run along a side boundary or the length of the garden and still leave room for lawn, seating and shade. Many lap pools are also used for play and relaxing, so a shallow step or a seating ledge at one end is common.
What makes a good lap pool
Length
The longer the pool, the fewer turns per minute of swimming. The plot usually sets the limit, so we look for the longest straight run in the garden.
Constant depth
A steady depth along the swimming zone makes turns and strokes comfortable. Steps go at one end or into a side recess so they are out of the swimming line.
Clean walls
No ledges or features in the swimming path. A lane line marked in the floor tile helps you swim straight.
Shade at the right time
Most people swim early in the morning or in the evening. Shade is placed for the hours you will actually use the pool.
Lighting for evening swims
In summer the pool is used after dark. Underwater lighting along the length makes night swimming safe and pleasant.
What an Olympic-size pool actually is
An Olympic-size pool, as used for long-course competition, is 50 metres long and 25 metres wide, divided into lanes, with a minimum depth of 2 metres under the competition rules. It holds around 2,500 cubic metres of water. That is a facility, not a garden pool: it needs a plant room, filtration and a site sized for it. Most people searching for one want a pool that feels serious for swimming. For a private villa that usually means a lap pool of the longest length the plot allows. For compounds, schools or residential buildings, the requirements depend on the use and the rules that apply to it, which are worked out at the Project Study stage.
Decisions to make early
- Where the long line runsAlong a boundary, through the middle of the garden, or from the house outwards. Each changes how the rest of the garden is used.
- Counter-current swimmingWhere length is short, a jet unit that pushes water against you lets you swim in place. It needs space in the plant room.
- CoverA long narrow pool is easy to cover. A cover reduces evaporation and keeps debris out.
- ConstructionLap pools are usually built in concrete so they can be any length. Fibreglass lap shells exist but come in fixed sizes.
- Water temperatureSwimmers often prefer the water cooler than people who just sit in it. Chilling or heating is chosen at the design stage.
The longest straight line in the garden
A lap pool is laid out along the longest straight line the plot allows, so the first job on the site visit is to find that line. Seating and steps then sit beside that line, not across it, as in the main photo above from Project Majestic, where a sunken structure for relaxation sits beside the pool. The two pools in the cards below, one of them a skimmer pool, add two more points to settle early: where the seating looks across the water, and lighting for evening swims, which a long pool needs from one end to the other.

How we deliver a lap pool
Project Study
A free site visit to find the longest workable line in your garden, check access and look at what the community allows near boundaries.
Plan
Length, width, depth, steps, equipment and the landscape around the pool are agreed, and you receive a programme.
Visualization
You see the pool in 3D within the whole garden, so you can judge how much space it leaves for everything else.
Execution
Our in-house team builds the pool and the surrounding works, run by a dedicated project manager who is your single point of contact.
We apply for the approvals required; which ones apply depends on the community and the scope.
What changes the cost
- Length, width and depth
- Excavation and access along a narrow side of the plot
- Finish, lane markings and coping
- Counter-current unit, heating or chilling
- Cover, lighting and automation
- Deck, shade and landscaping along the pool
