Choosing swimming pool tiles in Dubai
Pool tiles decide how the water looks, how the edge feels underfoot in August and how well the finish holds up to chlorine and sun. Here is what to weigh up before you choose.

Why pool tiles matter more than they seem
A pool finish has three jobs. It protects the waterproofed shell underneath. It survives constant contact with treated water and strong sunlight. And it creates the colour and character of the whole garden. Tiles are the most common finish for villa pools in Dubai because they do all three well, but the choice of material, colour, size and grout changes the result a great deal. The decision is easiest at the design stage of a new swimming pool, when the shell, the waterline detail and the coping can be planned together. It is also the main decision in most pool renovations, where old tiles have cracked, faded or come loose.
The main types of pool tile
Glass mosaic
Small glass pieces on a mesh backing. Glass does not absorb water, keeps its colour in the sun and follows curves, steps and benches easily. It reflects light, which gives the shimmer many people want in a pool. The many grout joints mean the grout choice matters.
Porcelain tiles
Dense, low-absorption tiles in larger formats, including stone-look and concrete-look designs. Fewer joints give a calmer, more architectural look that suits modern villas and overflow edges. Large flat tiles cannot follow tight curves.
Ceramic mosaic
A more traditional option with a matt or glazed face. Make sure the product is rated for full immersion in pools, because not every ceramic tile is.
Natural stone
Stone is used mostly for coping and surrounding decks rather than the pool interior. Some stones darken when wet or react to pool chemicals, so they need the right sealing and a sample test first.
How tile colour changes the water
The tile, the sky and the depth work together
Water takes its colour from the surface beneath it and from the sky above. White and pale blue tiles give the bright turquoise of a resort pool. Mid blues and greens give a deeper, more natural lagoon tone. Dark grey or black tiles turn the water into a mirror that reflects palms and the house, which suits reflecting pools and minimal gardens.
In Dubai there is one practical point to add. Darker finishes absorb more of the sun, so the water tends to run warmer in summer, when most families already find their pools too warm. Pale finishes stay brighter and show debris quickly, which some owners see as an advantage. Ask for tile samples and look at them wet, outside, in daylight. A tile under showroom lights tells you very little.

Details that decide how well the tiles last
- Waterproofing under the tilesTiles and grout are not the waterproof layer. The shell needs its own waterproofing system, applied and tested before tiling, so that a cracked joint does not mean a leak.
- Grout made for poolsEpoxy grouts resist chemicals and staining better than standard cement grout, which can wash out in treated water. Grout colour also changes the overall look, especially with mosaic.
- Movement jointsConcrete shells and decks move with heat. Movement joints at the right places stop tiles from cracking or lifting along the coping and steps.
- Slip resistance where people walkSteps, benches, sun ledges and the surrounding deck need a textured, slip-resistant finish. Smooth glossy tiles belong on the walls, not underfoot.
- The waterline bandThe tile line at the water surface collects sunscreen, oils and limescale. A band that is easy to clean, and a colour that hides marks, saves effort during maintenance.
- Edge and skimmer detailsOn a skimmer pool the tiles stop under the coping. On an overflow pool the water runs over the edge into a channel, so the tiling of the edge and grating has to be precise.
Coping and the pool deck
The coping is the edge you sit on, and the deck is where you walk barefoot. Both are in full sun for much of the year.
Light colours stay cooler
Pale stone and porcelain absorb less heat than dark materials, which can become uncomfortable to walk on at midday in summer.
Rounded or eased edges
A bullnose or eased edge is kinder to elbows and legs than a sharp square edge, and it chips less.
Falls away from the pool
The deck should drain away from the water so that dust and garden debris are not washed into the pool.
