Hardscaping for villa gardens in Dubai
Hardscaping is the built part of a garden: the paving, walls, steps and bases everything else sits on. We set it out in 3D before the first plant goes in, then build it with our own team.

Hard landscaping and soft landscaping
Softscape is what grows: lawn, planting, trees and the irrigation that keeps them alive. Hardscape, or hard landscaping, is everything that is built: paving and interlock, driveways, paths and stepping stones, retaining and boundary walls, planters, steps, decking, the bases under pergolas and gazebos, the pool surround, sunken seating, fire pits and BBQ counters. It goes in first, carries the services and is difficult to change later. At OutMazed® Design hardscaping is part of our landscaping scope, so walls, surfaces and planting are drawn as one scheme and built in the right order by one team.
The elements of a hardscape
Paving and interlock
Terraces and patios in porcelain, natural stone or interlocking pavers, laid on a prepared base with the falls built in. More on our paving and interlock page.
Driveways and parking
Hard standing built to take the weight of cars, on a heavier base than a path, shedding water away from the house and the gate.
Paths and stepping stones
Continuous paths for everyday routes, or stepping stones set into lawn, artificial grass or pebbles for a lighter line.
Retaining and boundary walls
Walls that hold back a change in level, divide zones, carry cladding or planting, or form the garden face of the boundary. See our garden wall page.
Planters, steps and decking
Raised masonry planters, steps between terraces, composite decking and the slabs and footings under pergolas and gazebos, all set to one level plan.
Pool surrounds and masonry features
Coping and deck laid to fall away from the water, plus sunken seating with built-in steps, fire pits and BBQ or bar counters with cabinets below.
Materials that cope with Dubai
Heat, glare, blown sand and irrigation water are hard on outdoor surfaces.
- Porcelain pavingDense and low in absorption, so irrigation water marks it less; pale, textured finishes stay cooler and grip when wet.
- Natural stoneHarder stones suit driveways and terraces; softer, porous stones mark more easily near planting and pools.
- Concrete pavers and interlockPractical for driveways and side passages, and easy to lift and relay where a pipe runs underneath.
- Composite deckingBoards that resist splitting and rot in the heat better than untreated timber, for platforms, pool decks and pergola floors.
- Rendered and clad blockworkWalls, planters and counters built in block, then rendered or clad, with movement joints so finishes are less likely to crack as the wall heats and cools.
Falls, drainage and what runs underneath
The parts you never see decide how the garden lasts
Every hard surface has to shed water somewhere other than against the villa, into the pool or onto the neighbour's plot, so falls, channels and gullies are set before a slab is laid. In Dubai that water is mostly irrigation and wash-down rather than rain, so a terrace sprayed every morning needs the same care as one that floods rarely.
Irrigation pipes, lighting cables, pool pipework and power for a BBQ counter all run under the hardscape. Sleeves at the crossing points, placed before the base goes down, mean a light or a tap can be added later without lifting the paving.

Hardscape sets the plan before planting
Walls, paving and bases are fixed, so they are drawn first and built first. Their layout decides where you sit, eat, walk and park, and where the beds fall; the softscape is fitted into the spaces left and the irrigation zoned to match. A family that eats outdoors needs more terrace and counter, a garden mostly seen from inside can carry more planting, and on a townhouse plot the hardscape does most of the work, softened by a strip of lawn or artificial grass. Paving sits well where the house, a pergola or trees give afternoon shade; open sun is better given to planting or the pool.

How we deliver hardscaping
Project Study
A free site visit to measure the plot and check levels, existing surfaces, drainage, access and where services already run.
Plan
Surfaces, walls, steps, bases and falls are set out with the services underneath. We confirm which approvals apply in your community and apply for them ourselves.
Visualization
The hardscape in 3D with the planting, lighting and any pool, so paving colours, wall heights and levels are agreed before anything is built.
Execution
Our in-house team lays services and bases, builds walls and planters, then lays paving and decking, with a dedicated project manager as your single contact.
Duration depends on the work; a programme is given after the site visit.
What changes the cost
The paved area and the length and height of walls; the material chosen; whether old paving, soil or walls have to be broken out first; the base needed, heavier under a driveway than a path; level changes, retaining walls and steps; built-in features such as sunken seating, fire pits and counters; and access, because on many villas every slab goes through a side passage. A quotation follows the site visit.
