Where wallpaper works, and where it does not
Wallpaper gives a wall pattern, texture or a printed image that paint cannot, and it changes a room faster than most other finishes. It works best on a single feature wall such as behind a bed, a sofa or a dining table, in bedrooms and children's rooms, in powder rooms where a bold pattern is fun in a small space, and in corridors and stairwells. It is less suitable where walls get wet or very hot, such as directly behind a hob or inside a shower. Most of the result depends on what you cannot see: a flat, dry, primed wall and careful matching of the pattern at every seam. Wallpaper has been part of our interior work before; Project Bold in Damac Hills 2 included wallpaper alongside ceiling painting and carpeting.
Types of wallpaper
Non-woven
Easy to hang, as the paste goes on the wall, and usually easy to strip later. A common choice for living rooms and bedrooms.
Vinyl
A tough, wipeable surface that copes better with humidity. Used in kitchens, laundries, children's rooms and busy corridors.
Textured and embossed
Raised patterns, linen, plaster or stone effects that add depth and hide minor wall imperfections.
Natural wallcoverings
Grasscloth, cork and fabric. Beautiful but more delicate, and seams are visible by nature.
Murals and custom prints
A single image printed to the size of your wall, from landscapes to brick or stone effects.
Brick and stone effect
Printed or embossed papers that give the look of exposed brick or stone without the weight or the building work.
Choosing wallpaper for the room
- Bedroom wallpaperUsually a feature wall behind the bed. Softer patterns and textures help a bedroom feel calm.
- Living and dining roomsOne wall with a strong pattern or texture, often framed by joinery or lighting.
- Kitchen wallpaperOnly away from heat and splashes, in a vinyl or wipeable paper.
- Bathrooms and powder roomsPowder rooms suit bold papers; in bathrooms with showers, wallpaper is kept well away from the wet zone and the room must be ventilated.
- Sunny wallsStrong sun fades some papers over time, so light-fast products suit walls facing large windows.
- QuantityPattern repeat, ceiling height and wall width decide how many rolls are needed. Large repeats waste more paper.
Why wall preparation matters most
The wall behind the paper
Wallpaper shows every problem in the wall beneath it. Cracks, bumps, old paint flaking, and patches of different absorbency all come through, and a damp wall makes paper bubble or peel. Before hanging, walls are checked for moisture, old paper is stripped, holes and cracks are filled, uneven areas are skimmed and the whole wall is primed so the paste grips evenly and the paper can be removed later without tearing the plaster.
Hanging is then a matter of planning. The first drop is set plumb rather than to a corner that may not be straight, the pattern is matched across every seam, and the paper is cut neatly around switches, sockets, skirting and ceilings. Where wallpaper meets joinery or panelling, the order of work is agreed so the edges finish cleanly.
