Pergola vs gazebo: which suits a Dubai garden?
Both give shade and a place to sit, but a pergola and a gazebo work differently and suit different gardens. Here is the difference, and how to decide for a Dubai villa.

The short answer
A pergola is a frame of posts and beams with an open or partly open roof, such as slats, louvres or a fabric canopy. It is often attached to the house or set over a terrace, and it gives filtered shade. A gazebo is a freestanding structure with a solid roof. It stands on its own in the garden and gives full shade and cover from rain. In Dubai the choice usually comes down to how much shade you need, where the structure will stand, and whether it should feel like part of the house or a destination in the garden. Both are part of our landscaping work, and both are designed in 3D before they are built.
Gazebo and pergola: the differences side by side
Roof
Pergola: open slats, adjustable louvres or a shade fabric, so sun and air pass through. Gazebo: a fully covered roof, often pitched or flat with an overhang.
Shade
Pergola: filtered, moving shade that changes with the sun's angle, unless it has louvres or a cover. Gazebo: full, constant shade underneath.
Position
Pergola: often against the house, over a terrace, a BBQ area or a path. Gazebo: usually freestanding, set within the garden or beside the pool as a focal point.
Feel
Pergola: an extension of the living room into the garden, light and open. Gazebo: a separate outdoor room, more enclosed and defined.
Rain and dust
An open pergola does not keep out rain or dust. A gazebo roof does. Rain is rare in Dubai, but dust and bird droppings are not, so a cover matters for furniture and cushions.
When a pergola is the better choice
Shade that keeps the garden open
A pergola suits terraces next to the house, where you want shade without blocking the view or the light into the living room. It works well over an outdoor dining table, a BBQ counter or a walkway. It can carry climbing plants such as bougainvillea for extra shade and colour, and it can hold lighting and fans.
In Dubai's summer, an open slatted roof alone may not give enough shade at midday. Louvred aluminium roofs, which can be opened or closed, or a fixed cover over part of the pergola, give more control. Floating bases and underlights make the structure look lighter at night. Because a pergola is usually seen from inside the house, its proportions matter: beams that line up with the doors and windows behind it, and posts placed clear of the main view to the garden, make it feel like part of the architecture rather than an add-on.

When a gazebo is the better choice
- You want a destination in the gardenA gazebo at the end of a path or beside the pool gives people a reason to walk out into the garden.
- You need full shade for long periodsA solid roof gives the deepest shade for lounging, children's play or a majlis-style seating area outdoors.
- Furniture stays out all yearCushions and fabrics last longer under a solid roof that blocks sun and dust.
- The garden is large and openIn wide gardens with little existing shade, a freestanding gazebo creates a shaded zone where the house cannot.
Materials that cope with the climate
Aluminium
Light, rust-resistant and low-maintenance, with a powder-coated finish. It is the usual choice for louvred roofs and clean modern designs.
Timber
Warm and traditional, but strong sun dries and greys timber, so it needs regular oiling or sealing to stay in good condition.
WPC and composite
Wood-look composite profiles need less upkeep than timber and are often used for slats and cladding.
Steel and masonry
Steel frames allow long spans and slim profiles but need good corrosion protection. Masonry columns suit heavier, more permanent gazebos. Whatever the material, choose light colours for roofs and frames in full sun. Dark finishes absorb more heat and radiate it back onto the people sitting underneath.
Approvals and practical checks
Fixed garden structures usually need approval from the community before they are built. The rules depend on the community and on the size and position of the structure. We apply for the approvals ourselves. Also plan the foundations for wind loads, the drainage from a solid roof, and the cabling for lights, fans or an outdoor kitchen before construction starts.
