Wooden flooring in Dubai

Real wood brings warmth, quiet and a texture no print can copy. It also asks more of the room than most floors, so we start by checking whether your space suits it.

WHAT COUNTS

What counts as wooden flooring in Dubai

A wooden floor has real timber as its walking surface. That sounds obvious, but in Dubai the term is used loosely: shops often sell laminate, vinyl and wood-look tiles as wood flooring. They have their place, and we install them too, but they are prints of wood rather than wood. Real wooden floors come in two constructions. Solid wood boards are cut from a single piece of hardwood. Engineered boards have a real wood top layer bonded to a core of cross-laid layers that resists movement. Both can be laid as long planks or as small blocks in a pattern, which is what parquet and herringbone are. Search interest for wood flooring and hardwood flooring in Dubai is about the same, and both terms mean the same family of floors.

YOUR OPTIONS

Your options within wood

01

Solid wood

Hardwood all the way through. It can be sanded and refinished many times over its life, but it moves more with changes in humidity. See solid wood flooring.

02

Engineered wood

A real wood surface on a stable multi-layer core. It looks the same as solid wood once laid and is the more forgiving choice where humidity swings. See engineered wood flooring.

03

Parquet patterns

Short blocks laid in geometric patterns such as basket weave, chevron or panels. See parquet flooring.

04

Herringbone

The best-known parquet pattern, with blocks meeting at right angles in a zigzag. See herringbone flooring.

WOOD AND

Wood and the Dubai climate

Wood takes in and gives off moisture, swelling slightly when the air is humid and shrinking when it is dry. In the UAE these are the points that matter.

  • Air conditioning keeps conditions steadyRooms that are air-conditioned all year are a good environment for wood. Problems tend to appear when the AC is switched off for weeks in summer and humid air gets in.
  • Doors to the garden or poolWet feet, sand and humid air at an open door are hard on any wood floor. A threshold of tile or stone, or a mat, protects it.
  • Direct sunStrong sun through large windows changes the colour of most woods over time and heats the surface. Blinds or curtains slow this down.
  • SandFine sand acts like sandpaper on a lacquered surface. Entrance mats and regular vacuuming do more for a wood floor than any product.
  • Wet roomsBathrooms, laundries and shower areas are not a place for wood. Tile, stone or microcement are the usual choices there.
INSTALLING A

Installing a wooden floor

Acclimatised, on a dry and level base

Wood is delivered to site and left in the room to settle to its normal temperature and humidity before it is laid. The screed underneath has to be dry, because a damp base will push moisture into the boards. On ground floors we look at whether a moisture barrier is needed.

Depending on the product and the base, boards are glued to the screed, nailed to a timber subfloor or floated on an underlay. Every method leaves an expansion gap at the walls, which skirting covers. Doors may need trimming, and thresholds to tiled rooms are planned so that the levels meet cleanly.

HOW WE

How we deliver a wooden floor

01

Project Study

A free site visit to measure, test the subfloor for moisture and level, and see where sun, doors and wet areas meet the floor.

02

Plan

We agree solid or engineered wood, the pattern and laying direction, thresholds and skirting, and apply for any approvals your building or community requires.

03

Visualization

You see the wood tone and pattern in 3D in your own rooms, next to the walls and joinery, before the order is placed.

04

Execution

Our in-house team prepares the base and lays the floor, managed by a dedicated project manager who is your single point of contact.

WHAT CHANGES

What changes the cost

  • Solid or engineered construction
  • Wood species, grade and finish
  • Plank width or block patternPatterns take more labour and more cutting waste.
  • Subfloor workLevelling, moisture barriers, or removing existing tiles.
  • Stairs, borders and thresholds
  • Finishing on siteSome floors are sanded and lacquered or oiled after laying.
FAQ

Questions and answers

Is hardwood flooring the same as wooden flooring?

Yes, in everyday use. Both refer to floors with real timber as the walking surface, whether solid or engineered.

Is laminate a wooden floor?

No. Laminate has a printed wood image on a fibreboard core. It can look like wood but cannot be sanded and does not have real timber on top.

Will a wooden floor warp in Dubai?

Wood moves a little with humidity. With a dry base, acclimatisation, expansion gaps and rooms kept air-conditioned, movement stays within what the floor can absorb. Engineered wood is the steadier choice.

Can wood go in a kitchen?

It can, with care around the sink and dishwasher and prompt wiping of spills. Many owners prefer a more water-tolerant floor there; see our kitchen flooring page.

Can a wooden floor be refinished?

Solid wood can be sanded and refinished several times. Engineered wood can be refinished depending on the thickness of its top layer.

How do I look after it?

Vacuum or sweep often to remove sand, use a barely damp mop, wipe spills quickly and put felt pads under furniture.

How long does installation take?

It depends on the work and the area. We give you a programme after the site visit.
